PostHeaderIcon How Important Is It to Have a Nice Environment at Work?

This article was written by Oxford Business Park.

Bleak offices, factory production lines, windowless offices and smoky environments were all commonplace. Staff were managed on the original ‘theory x / theory y’ school of thought, which involved managing staff very tightly, with centralised decision making, little flexibility, a strong and process-driven operating environment and strict management controls.

Why is a good working environment so important?
Numerous studies have shown the importance of a pleasant and healthy working environment. On Maslow’s hierarchy of needs – an established model of working satisfaction – a safe and healthy work environment is one of the most basic of needs for any employee.

How have things changed?
Government legislation was one of the first steps to improving the working environment, addressing everything from working hours regulations, to the control of hazardous substances and protective clothing, all designed to improve the basic working conditions of staff. At a basic and fundamental level, this started to tackle the abysmal health and safety records of employers (hark back to the working environments of our Grandparents and injuries / deaths in service were not uncommon in many physical occupations). The positive effects on the workforces were noticed: reduced absence, sickness and staff turnover, more productive working time and fewer incidents in the workplace.

Developing the ‘softer’ side
More recently, organisational psychologists started to investigate the links between ‘softer’ factors at work and business productivity. Staff morale and motivation was found to have proven links with business results and productivity and far greater emphasis was put into boosting employee goodwill, through strategies which included improving working environments. As society began to undergo a wider transformation, with greater numbers of skilled jobs, competition, qualified staff and changing expectations, employers were suddenly obliged to start making efforts to keep the best employees.

They began hiring experts to create pleasant working atmospheres. Everything from soothing office décor, to water fountains, better canteens, breakout areas and other on-site facilities, all designed to keep staff happy, comfortable, safe and secure during their working hours. No longer was basic safety sufficient, but employees, increasingly used to living in better environments, expected that their workplace would reflect this change for the better.

The results
Numerous workplace studies have proven the causal link between working environment and employee morale / organisational productivity. An entire industry has been created around workplace design, ergonomics and environment and the trend shows no sign of reversing, with staff surveys increasingly referencing the importance of their working environment.

Practical Steps to improving working environments
Smaller businesses needn’t despair however if they don’t have the budgets for koi carp ponds and water features in glass-fronted reception areas! Small details such as plants (proven to reduce stress in corporate environments), adequate water and refreshment facilities, large windows with views, controllable temperature controls, little perks such as food treats, spacious desk spaces and clean washrooms and kitchens are all small improvements that will pay serious dividends.

KEEP THE ENVIRONMENT GREEN AND CLEAN

The future of our environment may be on our present generation hands to try and save it, what about the future? The children of today are the future care taker of the environment. We need to involve them at their tender ages in the conservation effort.

We are a children home in Kenya having 34 children. Last year we thought about the future environment and who was going to take care of it.  We discover many programs and efforts to conserve our environment at present have little participation of children. That is why we decided to make our kids environmental conscience.

We started a club called keep the environment green and clean to concentrate with our environment. We initiated programs like having classes about the environment. organize a competition called environmental day, where the kids were divided into groups and each group was given a section to keep clean and green, and at the end of the day they wrote speeches which you can read in website and the winner was determined by how well they kept their environment green and clean and also by the content of their group speech.

This is a quote of one the kids thought about the environment, “Environment to me is all about our surrounding that we see feel and hear every day. It should be well cared for as a command from the creator of all. This is not just a corporate effort, but us all who enjoy the beauty of this mother earth. All the measures put in place to conserve the environment are useless if we don’t get involved as one big family.

It is saddening when we talk of laws yet not the weakness associated with it. To me, laws are political and it will never outweigh ‘personal responsibility’. As long as we are not interested as individual, then to hell with all the laws we dare make. Nobody, need to tell me that something is wrong with our environment. Every year the rain pattern keeps changing, temperature keeps increasing, sea level keeps rising! I don’t need a law to tell me this. Cop 15 in Denmark and Cop 16 in Mexico will always be failure if we keep chasing agreements.”

I believe this more other ideas can be copied in any neighborhood and have the kids participate in keeping their neighborhood green and clean.

PostHeaderIcon The Environment and Nature

How a positive spin is great on protecting the environment and experiencing life to the fullest while embracing the power of nature.

Centuries have passed while putting a positive spin on protecting the environment.

First and foremost, you’d want to prevent fires. especially forest fires by keeping it green from classic to elegant for industries that built our towns, communities and cities. Although, they say that coal, timbers, and glass all have played an important role into what we have begun and what we have to offer.

However, the beauty has evolved through towns and people have always sought new heights into protecting the environment to the highest point amidst the beauty by putting a positive spin on it. Meaning: high peaks and the highest point in the environment. So you’d want to make it a phenomenal view for nature watching in order to plan vacations and relax. first, you would have to keep everything right next to where you’d want to record everything happening in the environment to just keeping it fresh and clean.

You’d also want to multi-surface and multi-task. although, it’s a known fact that fresh plants make your environment gloomy and dreary and you wouldn’t want to leave the environment in perils. so, you’d definitely want to reshape the environment and just wouldn’t want to wait another minute for a bad look to come about.

However, putting a signature spin on protecting nature which changes a lot especially if someone else is trying to put negative spins on everything else around it because everyone knows that each winter blasts that we have, usually blankets the country and throughout the whole Tri-state area. Although, people have made too many priorities that weren’t kept when dealing with the environment.

for instance: Wintery precipitation is like this: how you pick your car, is like picking a crop and like paving away from what is reality and what’s not reality.

The cattle: Thinking of the cattle, farms, and crops you’ll need fresh crops with finishing touches on everything else around you in order to build the economy for consumer rights.

With tree recycling: You should remove all dead branches meaning you’ll need to landscape.

The mountains: Mountains make it an awesome place on the planet spectacular and want to explore the amazing outdoors and surroundings and you’d want to be able to enjoy the great outdoors in order to be able to have it where the animals and birds can breathe and run around.

However, having a positive spin on protecting the environment is a spirit of adventure with a bold new attitude and determination with a spiritual eloquence almost like a land of enchantment with the whole palm springs look which brings modern ingenuity. however, its a place where people might want to have a positive look on protecting the environment to where you can grow and maintain fresh crops in order to eat great and make the environment a special place to discover.

Although, a changing environment will continue to affect people in many different parts of the world in unique ways and statistics on the environment provides an excellent way for us to determine whether the environment is improving or worsening. humans are treating the environment better or worse than they have done in the past.

Although, pollution, hazardous waste, and many other environmental problems usually creates a major health threat for people around the world which is an environmental health organization that works with agencies in the developing world to try to eradicate harmful diseases. we can also make significant strides to improve the planet that we share by doing this.

VIP: We should recycle

-eliminate the use of electrical appliances for things that you can easily do by hand.

-Use cold water in the washer whenever possible

-don’t ever leave water running needlessly

-flush the toilet less often

-recycle cans, bottles, paper bags and definitely, recycle your christmas tree.

And last, but not least: teaching children t respect nature and the environment.

If we don’t do these steps and teach our children to do those things involving the environment and our surroundings and then we wouldn’t have a positive spin and it would continue to leave a negative spin on the world.

PostHeaderIcon World Environment Day Today

World Environment Day (WED) is a day that stimulates awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and public action. It is on 5 June. It was the day that United Nations Conference on the Human Environment began. The United Nations Conference on the Human Environment was from 5-16 June 1972. It was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972. The first World Environment Day was on 1973. World Environment Day is hosted every year by a different city with a different theme and is commemorated with an international exposition on the week that 5 June is on. World Environment Day is in summer in the Northern Hemisphere and winter in the Southern Hemisphere.

“Stockholm was without doubt the landmark event in the growth of international environmentalism,” writes John McCormick in the book Reclaiming Paradise. “It was the first occasion on which the political, social and economic problems of the global environment were discussed at an intergovernmental forum with a view to actually taking corrective action.”

World Environment Day is similar to Earth Day.

Earth Day is a day designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s environment. It was founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in in 1970 and is celebrated in many countries every year. Earth Day is celebrated in spring in the Northern Hemisphere and autumn in the Southern Hemisphere. Many communities celebrate Earth Week, an entire week of activities focused on environmental issues.

In the United States, Earth Day is celebrated each year on April 22. The United Nations celebrates Earth Day each year on the spring equinox, which is often 20 March. This is a tradition which was founded by peace activist John McConnell in 1969. The first governmental recognition of Earth Day, authorized by the city San Francisco, was on the spring equinox in 1970. The United Nations adopted this holiday the next year and celebrated Earth Day for the first time on the spring equinox in 1971.

Thursday is the 40th anniversary of the first Earth Day, which with the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency the same year, heralded the beginning of the modern environmental movement. The USA has seen environmental advancements during every decade since:

•1970s: Congress passed the Clean Water Act and Clean Air Act.

•1980s: The Superfund Law was passed, setting the stage for the cleanup of abandoned waste sites.

• 1990s: Amendments to the Clean Air Act brought more pollution protections from dust and soot.

• 2000s: Advances were made to cut vehicle and equipment emissions and to regulate mercury emissions.

PostHeaderIcon Pollution by Cars is Harming Our Environment More Than You Think

Pollution by cars is a major issue for most of modern-day societies. The pollution in air is comprised of many environmental attributes. It contains carbon monoxide, nitrates, sulfur dioxide, ozone, lead, secondhand tobacco smoke and particulate matter. Particulate matter, also known as particle pollution, is comprised of liquid and solid particles in the air. It is produced from road dust, tire fragmentation, vehicle emissions, power generation and industrial combustion, smelting and other metal processing, construction and demolition activities, residential wood burning, windblown soil, pollens, molds, forest fires, volcanic emissions and sea spray. These particles vary significantly in size, composition and origin.

Overloaded and busy streets of the USA contribute much to the deterioration of the air pollution issue. Carbon monoxide is a biggest constituent of air pollution. It is highly toxic, odorless and colorless gas. It is connected with incineration reaction in cars and other vehicles same with cigarette smoke. Carbon monoxide is dangerous due to the fact that when our body consumes it, the level of oxygen diminishes. Higher ranges of carbon monoxide is a danger to one’s life. Minimal levels of CO if inhaled by the body in a long extent of time will still cause respiratory sickness. Too much exposure may lead to harmful health issues.

When you go out on streets, you see large trucks blowing out too much murky smoke. Analysis depict that there is a very huge negative impact caused by pollution from cars and other air pollutants.

A study clarifies that a personís exposure to toxic constituents of air pollution may differ as much within one city as across different cities. After surveying 5000 human beings for eight years, the analysts also observed that exposure to traffic-allied air pollutants was extremely linked to mortality than were city-wide background levels. For instance, those who lived near a busy road were more probable to die of a cardiovascular event.

Some examinations had approximated that citizens living in the most polluted US cities could drop 1.8 to 3.1 years because of exposure to constant air pollution. This has showed the way to conclude that:

Temporary exposure to increased ranges of particle pollution is linked with a greater danger of death due to a cardiovascular event.

Hospital admittance for various cardiovascular and pulmonary issues heightens in reply to greater concentration of particle pollution. Extended exposure to higher levels of particle pollution is a factor in dropping total life expectancy by a few years. These facts are really indicating us what future awaits Americans if this scenario carries on. Indeed, a demand to normalize pollution by cars is needed not only for the well-being of the present time, but for the times ahead.

The business has to analyse the effect of these dimensions and ways of adapting so as to operate profitably and ensure survival in the long term. Business environment refers to all external forces, which have a bearing on the functioning of business. The business environment factors “are largely if not totally, external and beyond the control of individual industrial enterprises and their managements. The business environment poses threats to a firm or offers immense opportunities for potential market exploitation.

Business has to adapt to its environment to ensure survival. The role of business is crucial and involves that it is an important institution in society, it supplies of goods and services, creation of job opportunities and contribute to the economic growth of the country among others. Hence business survival should be ensured, as its success transforms to better economy and standards of living of workers and the society around. There is symbolic relationship between business and its environment and among the environmental factors. Generally, business is influenced by its environment to certain degree and it will influence the external forces. These environmental forces are dynamic. They keep on changing as years roll by, so does business. A particular business firm, by itself, may not be in a position to change its environment, but along with other firms, business will be in a position to mould the environment in its favor.

The benefits of environmental study include the development of broad strategies and long-term policies of the firm, development of action plans to deal with technological advancements, to foresee the impact of socio-economic changes at the national and international levels on the firm’s stability, analysis of competitor’s strategies and formulation of effective countermeasures and to keep oneself dynamic.

The environmental analysis process involves four sequential processes namely scanning, monitoring, forecasting and assessment. Scanning involves general surveillance of all environmental factors and their interactions. Monitoring involves tracking the environmental trends, sequences of events, or streams of activities. Forecasting is concerned with developing plausible projections of the direction, scope, and intensity of environmental change. Assessment, tries to answer questions such as what are the key issues presented by the environment, and what are the implications of such issues for the organization.

Importance of business to adapt to its environment

(a)   To meet Business Goals

If the business adapts to its environment it will be able to meet its business goals. Business goals include profit making, growth, power, employee satisfaction and development, quality services and products, market leadership, joy of creation and service to society.

If the business understands the culture around it, it will be easy for it to operate at a profit because after adapting to the environment it is now easy to strategies way s of conducting business profitably. The business can now afford to separate activities that lead to profit generation from other products. The business can be able to compete for market share for its products and services.

For the achievement of every goal, the business has to adapt to the business environment it operates. If a business is not achieving its goals then its very unnecessary to operate especially if it cannot achieve profitability for a long time. Hence managers should quickly understands and adapt to the environment.

(b)   Enhances Decision Making

Understanding the works of the economy is a means to an end of improving decision making. The decision makers should therefore analyse the economic environment and how it acts as an external constraint on the decision making process. This involves understanding both the micro and macro environments and quickly adapting to the environments.

Adapting to the political environment will also aid decision making. This involves organisation making decision that are in line with the current political environment. Due to the power of politics an organization that fails to comply with such laws and regulations is likely to be punished to the extent of losing operating license. This is very crucial especially to organization in the export sector, banking sector and mining sector. These sectors attract a lot of attention as they derive the economy through linkages.

Understanding the cultural environment also helps in decision making environment. Adapting will mean that as the company advances its products and operations should make sure it does not violate the norms of the society as it risks losing support. If the form diverts from society tastes and preferences its products may be rejected in the market and hence losses are likely to arise. The R&D department should research thoroughly for innovation to be in line with society cultures.

(c)    Product Development

When a firm needs to develop its products it is highly recommended for it to have adapted to its environment. Products and services should be developed in line with the cultural environment in place, legal or political mandates as well as economic bindings. For example in the clothing industry each culture has its own type of clothing and it will only be profitable to develop and sell those type of clothes related to the cultural environment. Even if the business decides to update their products version, it still should be acceptable culturally. This only possible when the business has adapted to the environment and understands it.

Most importantly, adaptation to the political environment is necessary for product development. Firms should develop those products that are legally acceptable. This is only possible if the business understands its political environment and quickly adjust to adapt to the environment. This is very crucial to the services offered by various non-governmental organizations.

(d)   Staff Motivation

Firms usually recruit the bulk of its employees from the local market. So it is wise that the business understands and adapt to its environment. The cultural dimension is the most important in this case, managers should understand the cultures that governs the local people and hence strategies how best to work with them.    Managers should not blame their workers for the behavior related to their culture rather should aim to transform or shape their skills to suit business standards. The political environment should also be taken into account for staff motivation, this refers mainly to the way managers choose to motivate its workers, it should not go against what is legal in those times.

(e)    Competition

For firms to compete in the markets they should understand and adapt to the business environment. There is no way they can effectively compete without understanding the business environment. This ensures long term survival of the business. Addressing of barriers to entry can be effected by organizations that have adapted to the political environment.

(f)    Investment and Business Growth

Efficient investment and business growth are some important factors that cause businesses to adapt to their operating environments. Economic environment is very crucial in this case especially for foreign investors. Foreign investors should adapt to the economic environment in order for them to effectively explore business opportunities  and ensure growth. Mining and transport sectors are good examples in this case.

Conclusion

Adapting to business environments is a crucial to the survival of business. It is very crucial especially for foreign managers to quickly adjust and adapt to the environment they operate. This will enhance their leadership style and be a good leader. The business manager should avoid using the wrong approach to a certain environment which is suitable for another environment. This means that managers should be flexible and willing to learn whenever they join new locations. With increased globalization the business environment has become too complex. Managers and business should not be resistance to change.
